This guide explains how to plan and verify MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) backups for Korg keyboards such as the M1, N364, and TRITON. Their menus, data formats, and transfer options differ by model, so use the matching Korg manual rather than assuming one procedure works on every instrument.
What a MIDI backup contains
A SysEx transfer can preserve supported instrument data such as programs, combinations, global settings, or sequences. The available data types depend on the keyboard. A MIDI recording of notes is not the same as a bulk data backup, and a dump from one model may not load into another.
Prepare the MIDI connection
- Connect the keyboard’s MIDI OUT to the interface’s MIDI IN for a backup transfer. For restoring data, connect the interface’s MIDI OUT to the keyboard’s MIDI IN.
- Open a transfer tool that can capture and send SysEx data. Check that its filters, device ID, and input/output ports match the instrument instructions.
- Choose only the data types you need and start the keyboard’s model-specific dump procedure.
- Save the received file with the keyboard model, date, and data type in its filename. Keep an untouched copy in a second location.
- Confirm the file is not empty and that the software reports a completed transfer. When practical, test restoration using a spare or backed-up user area.

Before restoring a dump, verify the model, memory configuration, and data format. Loading the wrong file or sending a transfer to the wrong instrument can overwrite user data. Keep your original backup untouched until you have confirmed the restored settings.
